Jatropha Curcas Linn (Jatropha) by Plantations International is a plant whose seeds contains 30 to 40 per cent of their mass in inedible lipid oil, making them an ideal source for Biofuel. The Jatropha plant can grow in difficult soil conditions (including arid and otherwise non-arable areas), so it does not compete for prime land with food crops. A deciduous, scarlet-flowering shrub with a thickened trunk that reaches to about 750mm tall. The trunk sheds its greyish-green skin. A very good plant for dry rockeries. Family: Euphorbiaceae Botanical Pronunciation: JAT-roh-fuh pod-AG-ree-kuh. Jatropha podagrica Family: Euphorbiaceae Gout Plant, Gout Stick, Buddha Belly, Guatemala Rhubarb, Tartogo Origin: Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua. Jatropha (Gout plant) is an attention grabber and a must in every tropical garden. It has a large bottle-like caudex and huge leaves up to 10-12 inches in diameter. The more shade, the bigger the leaves. Jatropha Podagrica is a tender succulent perennial from Central America and the West Indies so, as you might expect, it doesn’t do cold weather, preferring a temperature that doesn’t fall much below 10C, so it makes an ideal specimen for the conservatory or windowsill. Jatropha podagrica Budda young plant. Not sent potted (not necessary). Buddha belly plants (Jatropha podagrica), also known as bottle plants, are succulents native to dry or semi-moist tropical climates, and often they're grown as ornamental houseplants or outdoor shrubs in warm climates.

Product info

The Jatropha podagrica is a tropical plant native to South America. This plant has a stem that is broad to start off with and then tapers off like a jar or a bottle. The leaves grow from the top of the stem and are light-green and large. When the plant is in flower, it develops beautiful orange flowers. In Holland this plant is also called ‘ bottle plant ‘, because the stem looks like a bottle. The leaves and flowers appear to have been put into a bottle. Taking care of this indoor plant is really simple. Moreover the Jatropha podagrica is an excellent eye-catcher for any plant lover in search of something special.

The exotic plant, Jatropha podagrica prefers a light spot or one in half shadow. Direct sunlight can harm the plant. In summer the Jatropha podagrica needs quite a lot of water, the soil should always be slightly moist. On the other hand in winter when there is no growth the soil should be allowed to dry out. The temperature must remain above freezing point, but other than that the Jatropha podagrica does not require any special temperature. The soil of a ‘bottle-plant’ should be permeable and can for example consist of a mix of sand and potting soil. Araflora sells beautiful containers, which show this special plant to full advantage.

Jatropha podagrica
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Gout Plant, Gout Stick, Buddha Belly, Guatemala Rhubarb, Tartogo
Origin: Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua

Jatropha (Gout plant) is an attention grabber and a must in every tropical garden. It has a large bottle-like caudex and huge leaves up to 10-12 inches in diameter. The more shade, the bigger the leaves. Great natural bonsai. Makes a good potted plant but can also be used as a conversation piece specimen in a small garden. This showy plant grows about 2-3 ft high, with a knobby, swollen stem and red flowers in large terminal clusters. Partial sun and a well-drained soil are preferred. Propagation is by seeds, which are produced freely and germinate easily. When the seeds ripen, they burst open, so watch them to turn brown before you miss them jumping away! Seed pods will explode, launching the seeds several feet away.
